Who we are...

SEVEN MILE ROAD HOUSTON

Our name comes from Luke 24, the Road to Emmaus. We have adopted both our name and strategy from this passage. In this account, two men were journeying from Jerusalem to Emmaus on the Sunday that Jesus walked out of his tomb, alive. These two men were not aware of Jesus’ resurrection and were sad about His death. They were walking and talking, sharing their sadness freely with one another. We refer to their authentic relationship along the road as “Journey Together”. We aim to mimic that impulse in our community by placing a high emphasis on vulnerability and being known.

As the men walked and shared, a Stranger entered their conversation. He engaged them in discussion and then opened the scriptures with them, explaining how all of the prophecies and scriptures of the Old Testament had pointed to Jesus. Upon reaching their destination, the men invited their Companion to stay and dine with them. As He broke bread and prayed, the men realized that their mystery Guest was the resurrected Christ. They remarked to each other that their hearts had burned within them while Jesus had taught from the Bible. We long to regularly reproduce this heart-warming encounter as we “Behold Jesus” together. This is accomplished by being Christ-centered in our Sunday gatherings, as well as in our House Churches.

The final chapter of the seven mile road unfolded as the stunned men realized that everyone had to hear the good news that Jesus was alive. These two travelers immediately hit the road and ran back to Jerusalem, excitedly letting people know that Jesus was the true and living King. We refer to this final movement as “Spread Hope” and believe that it is integral to the life of every growing Christian. Ultimately, our aim as a church is to have our people walk this road continually as we Journey Together, Behold Jesus, and Spread Hope.

What we believe...

Though “doctrine” is often derided as intolerant and narrow-minded, this is simply our best attempt to arrange and describe what we believe to be the teaching of the Bible. We also hope this provides a clear articulation of the beliefs that ground and orient our church.

In addition to the following statement of faith, we find ourselves in general agreement with historic doctrinal confessions like The Apostle’s Creed, The Second London Confession, The Abstract of Principles, and the Lausanne Covenant.

ENJOY GOD

LOVE NEIGHBOR

We love people – all of them, without exception. As a community who has met God and been renewed by his grace, we cannot help but love those who bear his image. (Mark 12:29-31; James 2:1-13; Luke 15)

EMBRACE FAMILY

We love the local church and embrace each other as family. God is a good father, Jesus our older brother, and we are siblings knit together by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:12-17,29; 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8; 1 Timothy 5:1-2)

REVEAL TRUTH

We are fearlessly committed to the truth, both about ourselves and about God. His Word is to be treasured and we will be an honest, humble people in his presence. (John 1:14; Acts 20:20, 26-27; Ephesians 4:15-16; James 5:16; Revelation 22:18-19)

FACILITATE MOVEMENT

God is on the move in the world and we want to be a part of what he's doing. Movement cannot be manipulated but can be experienced where multiplication and partnership meet. (Matthew 9:36-38; 28:16-20; John 17:20-23; Acts 1:8; 13:1-3; Philippians 4:14-20)
